Many of the parties and celebrations are based on religious traditions. These often are very famous, especially in the Andean high regions where people still believe in Gods like the Mountains, the Mother Earth (Pachamama). Many celebrations show the fusion between Andean and Spanish culture. Some of the biggest events are:

FEBRUARY

Carnival Festivals

Particularly very popular in the villages of the Sacred Valley; in Cusco there are typical carnival dances, people play painting each other faces with coloured powder, and also play with water, the typical food is Puchero.

MAY

Qoyllur Riti's Lord Festivity

(Cusco) It is a very religious manifestation of cult to the mountains and Christ, people walk for 5 hours (pilgrimage) until reaching Qoyllur Riti snow covered mountain, located in Sinakhara - Ocongate.

JUNE

The festivity of Corpus Christy (Cusco)

This festivity is celebrated between May and June with the procession of images (different manifestations of the Virgin and also different Saints) that come from the all churches of the city, escorted by typical and colorful dancers. On the streets the typical dish Chiriuchu is sold.

The Inti Raymi (Cusco)

It's the Party of the Sun, the most important celebration in the Inkas time, the main play is performed at the Complex of Sacsayhuaman, representing to the Inka, the chasquis, aqllas etc. making offerings to the Sun. (24th June).

JULY

Virgen del Carmen Festivity

It's celebrated in Paucartambo Village 4 hours far from Cusco. Every year many people visit Paucartambo to appreciate and participate in the traditional party, it's impressive how people believe in the Virgin and show their faith. The shows are blinding and magical. People also can go to "Tres Cruces" (4,000 masl) to see the beautiful sunrise. (15th to 18th July).

AUGUST

Ofrenda a la Pachamama (Offerings to Mother Earth)

This festivity is celebrated in the Villages of the mountain range from Peru every August 1st. It's a ceremony where people offer many things like wine, candies, cookies, confetti and coca leaves, expressing their gratefulness for the fruits given by Mother Earth. (1th August).

DECEMBER

Santurantikuy

On 24th December the artisans of Cusco exhibit and put on sale the best of their works in the Santurantikuy fair on the main square of Cusco. In this fair people can buy Christmas articles (as the nativity scene images and more), souvenirs and artesanies from original Cusquenian Artists. On 25th the Cusquenian Christmas is celebrated and there is an exhibition of the Nativity scene in churches and most traditional houses.
